These photos belonged to my stepfather. His name was Nicholai Marochkin. All his life he was a mining engineer-geologist. He combine his studies at the Mining Institute with the work of the Karpinski All-Russian Geological Research Institute in the department of special investigations. After graduation he spent most of the time in the expeditions: Albania, Brunei, Borneo, Kalimantan...

In Vietnam he was assigned to the exploration of rare earth metals. When he was there for the last time, in 1979, during the war with China, he saved the materials of exploration works from capturing them by terrorists and he was awarded for his courage the Order and the title of Hero of Vietnam.

I’ve always been interested   — what could be just outside the edge of photographs? What could be outside the field of view? I tried to imagine what else was in these scenes.

When I look at these photos, I think he was happy at there.

In the mountains is my heart
